Elevated Bay View Home in Queenscliff
Perched above Swan Bay on a raised block in Queenscliff, this custom home by Grow Build & Design is a study in view-oriented architecture. The layout, material palette, and landscaping were all centred around one idea: outlook, timber, and garden. Maximising site potential and passive performance, every design decision reflects the coastal context.
Designed for a Northern Outlook
A large cantilevered roofline with timber-lined ceilings stretches seamlessly over topless glass highlight windows and continues over the cantilevered deck. This deck doubles as a carport beneath and extends the living space outdoors without compromising the northern views.
Every section of the north-facing façade is glazed, delivering uninterrupted views from the kitchen, dining, living areas, master bedroom, and office. These expansive windows do more than offer vistas. They invite natural light deep into the home throughout the day, supporting both comfort and energy efficiency. This is a refined example of how our home building team in Queenscliff can bring out the full potential of a site through carefully executed coastal design.
To complement the natural dune landscape, the home features:
- Charcoal timber-textured cladding
- Clear-stained or oiled blond Australian hardwoods for windows, doors, and ceilings
The resulting palette blends into the saltbush setting without imposing on its surroundings. These materials were selected not just for appearance, but to develop character over time as they weather naturally in the elements.
Natural Integration and Material Resilience
The cantilevered decking off the kitchen includes built-in planter boxes with integrated drainage and irrigation. These native gardens will eventually spill through the vertical radial sawn hardwood screens, softening the structure and tying it visually into the surrounding landscape.
Durability was also a key driver behind this design. The extreme salt exposure in the Queenscliff coastal zone required:
- Careful selection of all materials to avoid corrosion and decay
- Marine-grade fittings and finishes
- Well-sealed cladding and joinery
- Structural elements protected from salt-laden air and spray
Inside, the home prioritises longevity with robust details, functional planning, and minimal-maintenance surfaces that hold up to the local conditions. The home doesn’t just look out over the bay. It belongs to the bay.
