Rip View House Extension in Queenscliff

Originally a modest, L-shaped single-storey home, this property was completely transformed by Grow Build & Design into a striking three-storey residence. Positioned on the narrow stretch of land between Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff, the elevated site provided the perfect opportunity to make the most of coastal outlooks and ocean breezes.

Maximising the View

The design focused on capitalising on the site’s panoramic views. The new upper levels and rooftop deck capture sweeping scenes across Swan Bay, Port Phillip Bay, Port Phillip Heads, Lonsdale Bay, the Lonsdale Lighthouse, and the Mornington Peninsula. To retain a clean, understated street presence, the deck was recessed into the roofline. This not only protects users from coastal winds at standing height but also ensures the view remains uninterrupted.

Large wraparound corner windows were incorporated using a cantilevered steel structure, offering uninterrupted sightlines in multiple directions. Framed views, abundant natural light, and open spatial flow come together in a way that exemplifies the attention to detail typical of our Queenscliff home constructions. Timber cladding and stone elements reinforce the natural palette, connecting the home to its coastal environment.

Built for Coastal Conditions

Being positioned atop sea-facing cliffs brought unique environmental challenges. The marine climate required careful attention to construction detailing:

  • All external fixings were upgraded to marine-grade metal to prevent corrosion.
  • Stone cladding and timber finishes were sealed for longevity in salt-rich air.
  • Render and timber were chosen to balance resilience with aesthetic warmth.

The seamless integration of the three-storey extension into the existing structure demanded thoughtful pre-construction planning. Rooflines intersected on three sides, so every stage required precision to ensure waterproofing and continuity in form.

Design and Material Harmony

With a palette of stone, timber, and render, the extension balances natural character with durability. These materials were not only chosen for their performance but also to reflect the rugged beauty of the coastline. Seamless detailing and layered textures add to the visual depth of the finished home.

This project is a strong example of what can be achieved through intelligent design and specialist construction knowledge in complex coastal settings.
